Caring About Baby Ferrets!

Like all the mammals, ferret babies too need special care during their growth and development phase. And as a ferret owner, you have to be clear in your mind. A baby ferret stays for at least 6-weeks with the mother. If you have bought a ferret who has been separated from his/her mother quite early, before 5-weeks, then your role as a ferret mother and father cannot be ignored. You have to shower all your love and care to the pets.

As a ferret owner, you should get yourself trained prior to acquiring a ferret as the pet. You should also keep in mind that female ferret should not be touched quite frequently or moved quite often as doing so can be extremely dangerous to the ferrets as well as the owner. The female ferret usually gets irritated during the birth, and this in turn would be dangerous, should you think of moving any closer to her.

Kits are the baby ferrets that are born in a group of 6 to 8, having no hair on their skin, and these new born baby ferrets have a pinkish skin. The kits cannot see, and they spend most of their time eating, sleeping or indulging in all sorts of other leisure activities during the initial phases of their growth. It is only after 24-days have passed that you’d find the change in kits skin, when it begins to show a darker tone. Soon the eyes also begin to open up, as they start seeing the world around them.

As the kits reach 6th week of their growth and development, they are expected to be away from their mothers, and in the subsequent 7th week, vaccination will be administered to protect them from possible attacks from pathogens. It is during the same week when they can be de-scented.

When you acquire a baby ferret, just explore the brand of food that a kit has been eating while he/she was staying with his/her mother. It is necessary because, eventually you’d get the kit transferred to same or higher quality of branded food. And if you want to stick to the food brand that young ferret was having earlier, then you’d immerse the food into the water for around 5 to 10 minutes. Cat food is also a good alternative, but not always.

Ideally speaking, a ferret’s meal should contain 35% protein and 20% fat. Poultry fat contains vital fatty acids which are instrumental in keeping ferrets healthy and completely nourished. Baby ferret should also be supplied by fresh water. For this purpose, you need to change the water supply at least one in 24 hours. Further, a clean ferret cage is considered best for the supple and young ferret. A spick and span ferret cage ensures comfort and safety to your ferret. It’d keep him/her healthy as always.

As a baby ferret owner you need to check frequently that ferret does not chew and ingest beddings, or plastic or other things placed in the cage. Remember, Baby ferrets need all the care and attention so that they lead a secured and longer life.
